Learning Guitar – Reading Music Verses Learning By Ear

The vast majority of guitarists learn to play guitar without reading music. That doesn’t mean that they disregard the basic principles of music, for instance learning chords and basic scale patterns but it just means that they will pick things up by ear as opposed to reading it from musical score.

Many people believe that by removing the constraints of sight reading music allows a guitarist to flourish more becoming more original in their playing and performance. Would the world have had the influential talents of Jimi Hendrix or Jimmy Page had they gone to college to study guitar? It’s doubtful I think because what music teacher would have allowed Jimi Hendrix to turn his guitar upside down and string it in that fashion!

There are a few ways that a guitarist can learn to play without knowing how to read music. Copying someone else parrot fashion is a good way maybe by watching video or listening carefully to a song or guitar piece and working out the chord sequence. There are also many products or resources that are bought or paid for that show in detail how to play songs and these will also provide you with chord tabs and finger patterns.

It can become very easy to get bogged down searching for good quality resources. There is as much garbage out there as there is quality so I would suggest spending time researching websites and products and don’t be afraid to spend a little money if you find something that you like.

If you’re feeling creative and ambitious then you could have a go at writing your own songs. You’d be surprised at how rewarding this can be, plus it’s not that difficult either as many of the best songs ever written had used just 3 or 4 simple chords. If you can write songs early on, without being influenced then some fresh and original material can be created.

Watching video tutorials is a great way to learn guitar if you are a beginner. There are plenty of resources to show beginners how to play easy guitar songs too. You are welcome to reprint this article – but get your own unique content version here.
