Guitar directions refer to going up and down the neck as well as on the scales of guitar’s neck. The important point to remember is “up the neck” refers to moving toward your body and “down the neck” means away from the body. On the other hand, going up is moving up the pitch and ascending toward the neck of the guitar thereby making the note pitch goes up or higher. It is simply related to the fret numbers in increasing order as you go up the guitar’s neck.

For novice in this field, musical scale may be confusing. When you play the G major scale on the third fret with the Low E string going up to the third fret of High E string, it will seem like moving down. Don’t panic because it just means that you are going up through the scale since the pitch of the note will increase.

The important point here to avoid confusion is to listen carefully instead of watching your way through the guitar’s string. When you play upward the major scale, you will definitely move downward but up high the pitch.

As you move your way on the guitar and learn reading tabs, you will gain confidence in playing all songs. All types of guitar follow the same basic rules in terms of playing it. Learning how to play the guitar is really not as easy as most people believe. You must learn basic theory, plenty of chords that can be quite tricky to master, and even how to move between chords quick enough to put a song together. However, once you begin to get the hang of these basics, you will know all of your hard work was well worth the effort. You will be able to play your favorite songs any time you want without even thinking about it. Learning will be even quicker if you can avoid making the following four common beginner mistakes:

Trying To Move Too Quickly: I know, this one is no fun, but you cannot move too quickly through all of the basics just to get to the good songs and chords; your playing will suffer. You have to go through the boring stuff and master it, not just skim over it and move on, or it can halt your progress later on. Take your time and learn your scales, major and minor, learn how to read the notes, and do not rely just on the guitar tablature. Play around with finger picking; memorize it and practice everything. Do not worry; the good stuff will come soon enough.

Getting Caught Out By Barre Chords: Barre chords are the nemesis of most beginners, and it took me months to get the hang of them. These are the chords where one finger has to lie across a lot of different strings, and they are a real pain to start with! A lot of people give up when they reach this point, they can’t get the hang of them and they either obsess about them and don’t learn anything else, or get frustrated and stop completely.

A better way to proceed is to practice barre chords daily, but to also learn other things at the same time. This will allow you to devote half of your practice sessions to them, and half to new things. You will be moving forward, which will keep you from getting frustrated and once you do master barres, you will have learned plenty of new skills as well.

Ignoring Rhythm: Playing with a metronome might not seem cool, but it is crucial to get you used to sticking to the rhythm of the song. A lot of people just play a song how they think it should sound, with no appreciation of the actual rhythm. You can get away with that by yourself and it sounds ok, but if you try to play with anyone else, or play along to a backing track etc, then suddenly you will realize you speed up on the chorus, or you are playing way too slowly.

Sloppy Practice: Don’t let your practice sessions get sloppy, aim for quality every time and you will progress a lot faster. Don’t try to play too fast and ignore it when you make some mistakes, instead concentrate and make sure every note and chord is perfect before you speed things up. If you do allow your practice to get sloppy then it will show through in your playing.

The band extreme is responsible for the very popular tune “More Than Words”. This interesting blend of musicians came together during the late 1980s. Founded by Nuno Bettencourt and Gary Cherone, since its inception there have been a wide number of members rotate through the group over the years. Like other bands, there have also been periods of high volatility.

The early popularity experienced during the 80’s and the 90’s made Extreme a common household name. The band credits influences from early metal bands, such as Queen and Van Halen. Other popular names that contain similar musical qualities are the Drama Gods, Tribe of Judah, Morning Widows, Satellite Party and the infamous Twisted Sister. These bands all exhibit similarities in musical qualities.

Extreme has sold many albums. There are five notable albums that should get credit. There are also a few EPs that were sold exclusively in Japan and a few other releases. By the early 1990’s, they had album sales exceeding 10 million, which is huge. The highest selling album was the second release, “Porngraphitti”. This is the same album that contained “More Than Words”, which we will discuss in this review.

Now, they’re basically from Malden, Massachusetts. And in the late 80s, there had been a band that had some of the members called the Dream. Now as that band broke up, like earlier members Paul Geary and Gary Cherone were part of the Dream. And as they broke up and didn’t get along anymore, they ran into Nuno Bettencourt who’d been a band called Sinful. There was another bass player, Pat Badger, who was playing with a band called In the Pink. In any case, they ran into each other and even argued about various dressing room things at concerts they were doing together and stuff like that. And, eventually, they took the name of the Dream and made it Ex Dream, because they’d all left the Dream, and now they are Extreme. One of their songs was even a big hit in the movie Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure. So if you haven’t seen that movie and you’re really interested in Extreme. Probably everybody has seen that movie because it was great.

But their real claim to fame is, of course, “More Than Words” which came out on their second album, “Pornograffitti”. And it had some really nice guitar playing in it. This very percussive [music demo] playing that Nuno does and is very difficult to teach but I like to have people work on that kind of stuff. You have to break it done to just really specific mechanics that are hard to get the hang of. So it’s a song I really like to teach all of my students. Now when they recorded this, it became a big hit. It entered the Billboard’s Top 100 in 1991 and just became a huge hit, all over YouTube. You’ve probably seen there are some great YouTube videos including the main video at YouTube for this, where I guess the promotional one. You see, at the very beginning, dials getting turned down from the amplifier. And then the bass player and the drummer packing up their gear and going to have seats on the couch. And pretty soon, all you do is they focus in on Gary and Nuno and they’re just playing it. And the other two are sitting in couches, reading the newspaper, holding up little lighters as a show of the anthem like status they think the song deserves.

Anyway, and so, they enjoyed a medium amount of success for those couple of years until about 1993. And they got a little dicey later. And they brought in some new members by 1994 and 96. But they eventually broke up and just headed off for greener pastures. Although they have since gotten back together and put out an album recently. Let me find it…it’s missing…there we go. In 2010 and 2008. So they put out two more recent albums. Their first album was just called “Extreme”. The second one was called “Extreme II: Pornograffitti”. Third one was called “Extreme III Sides to Every Story”. That was in 1992. 1995, with a slightly revamped lineup now, they had “Waiting for the Punchline”. And in 2008, “Saudades de Rock”. Why they decided to head off into a French title? Not really sure.

I saw these guys on an episode of VH1’s Classic on VH1 classic, the “Metal Mania” show, where they were appropriately praised and deified by the hosts. Also watched a few videos of Nuno, trying to give a guitar lesson on his song “More Than Words”. He was a little reticent to do it to say the least. It wasn’t really his cup of tea. But he at least allowed the cameras to take close ups of his hands as he was doing this. But something about what he felt like was …it really seemed like he felt that the information he had about the guitar was kind of proprietary and he didn’t want you to know how it went.

Some people don’t want to share their talent or cooperate when teaching. For some students, this can be disturbing, since there is enough information to share, especially something that takes creativity like playing guitar.

So, it’s coming out …like right now, May of 2010 and it was recorded in Boston in 2009. So, it includes a lot of their big hits including “More Than Words”. So, I’ll have to check that out and see if they did it in their normal, acoustic guitar ballad manner or decided to dress it up on the tunes on it. And these are some of their other big hits: “Decadence Dance”, “Comfortably Dumb”, in case you have missed that and it’s of course, not the Pink Floyd song “Comfortably Numb”. And actually, none of their stuff sounds like Pink Floyd so that’s OK.

They have “Rest in Peace”, “It’s A Monster”, “Star”, “Tell Me Something I don’t Know”, “Kid Ego”, “Play with Me”, “Midnight Express”, and of course, “More Than Words” again, “Ghost”, “Cupid’s Dead”, “Take Us Alive”, “Flight of the Wounded Bumble Bee”. Now, one can only guess that this is taken from the famous War and Peace by Nikolai Rimsky Korsakov called “Flight of the Bumble Bee”. I think it is by Nick. I can’t remember it right now. My classical guitar links are suffering a little bit.

Oh, they are coming back. That was not “Flight of the Bumble Bee” but…and of course, couple of other big hits, “Get The Funk Out” and “Hole Hearted”. Now, there is a DVD that comes along with it that includes some other really interesting stuff but we are not going to talk about that anymore. We’ll just talk a little bit more about “More Than Words” because it is of course your typical Howard ballad, maybe. Oh, White Snake, that was the band I was trying to think of earlier that had a lot of these kind of things. They had the Girl Crawling On the Car sort of stuff and then meant for that…that real powerful look and screaming ballad type of thing. So, White Snake, another 80’s band and part of the Hair band stories that happened back in then.

“More Than Words” is a song addressing the person to show love through more than only words, but the appeal was universal. Even Weird Al Yankovic created a parody of this song with “you Don’t Love Me Anymore”. Amateur bands created spinoffs as well; the “amateur transplants” used a similar tune called “Northern Birds” from the 2006 album We Are so Bad.

This song also became a parody during an episode of “How I Met Your Mother”. with Jason Seagull. This eventually became a number one hit in the US, and the second largest in the UK. This put the band back on the map, with more people who knew that genre of music.

Many bands created their own version of this song. Some of the band in addition to the above mentioned Amateur Transplants included West Life, D.B. Mac and David Cassidy. This is someone who has had an up and down career, but during 2003 he released “A Touch of Blue”, and now many know him from his work with the Partridge Family. He was known for having a struggle with his identity, trying to find out if he was Keith Partridge, a TV rock singer, or did he want to be the real deal David Cassidy performing rock and roll guitar?

Well, it is tough to tell. David Cassidy really never stepped out of the shadows of Keith Partridge unfortunately. But he thinks he has. He was of course son of Jack Cassidy and stepson of Shirley McClain who was involved with him on the Partridge family. And getting back to his dad, Jack Cassidy, of course was an actor going way back into lots of character actor type thing from TV shows. He made three appearances in Columbo episodes. Peter Falk’s Rachel from the early seventies. Part of the NBC mystery movie series.

Peter Falk, Colombo, Jack Cassidy and Dick Van Dyke, were all famous villains. They were also all tied to David Cassidy. He is part of the story because he covered the song “More Than Words”. A last few observations on this song are the drippy sentiment this song conveys is a weak attempt to replicate great writers, such as Gershwin, or Cole Porter. The adolescent ramblings have been compared to John Meyers.

The band is still trying to stay alive. In fact, they are making quite a good living, since Nuno Bettencourt is such a prolific guitar player. He has been holding to the funky metal style, and it has been serving him well. We can keep hoping there will be more music coming from this group, since “More Than Words” and their other music is so phenomenal. It would be great to have more instructional material from this group as well.

Now, most of the other stuff can be found in various places on the Internet. All kinds of places around. I forgot to talk about one more thing and I was there as another great speaking of parodies. There is a great parody video, also at YouTube that would be worth checking out that talks… that shows…It looks at of…from the angle of what the other two guys were really doing or what they were really thinking or talking about while the video was going on. Now, this was not the real guys doing it but it’s still…somebody put together a great edited video that…

Do, if you’ve got a chance, track that one down but in any case “More Than Words” is well worth its weight in gold in terms of instructional stuff for guitar and entertainment value and everything else. Old things are often very valued things in our world. They symbolize the mistakes and the accomplishments we have made in the past, and they also give us a pretense for the future. They can bring back moments that made us happy and sad. One of these things is music, and with piano lessons, this idea can be conquered.

Music is something that has been around since man was able to stand upright and walk around. It is truly the oldest form of entertainment that we know of, and it is still able to provide exceptional entertainment today. Not many people are skilled at making this music, however.

There are so many ways that music can be made. Orchestras play beautiful music and hundred piece ensembles blow audiences away. Then there are tribes in Africa who play their music only by keeping a rhythm on a drum. Then there are the older people in the Middle East who play flute like instruments and other age old things. There is one instrument that has withstood the test of time. That instrument is the piano.

The piano started out as a vision by musicians who wanted to create a finger stimulated string instrument. They came up with the harpsichord, which is literally a harp that is played by playing keys. This soon turned into the piano, and became widely used all over Europe and Northern Africa. This piano was used by the best musicians and became the undeniable symbol of classical music, along with the violin, all over the world.

Playing the piano requires a lot of skill and hours of practice. The first step towards learning how to play is really learning which notes are which, especially if you intend to play music from a score. This can actually be the hardest part about learning how to play the piano. Once the notes are learned it is really just following the score.

Of course, not all music scores are really considered easy. There are so many different levels of piano playing, many of which vary in fundamentals, such as tempo, key changes, and other things, instead of the actual notes. Some easier songs only require the pianist to play with their right hand. The hardest songs can sometimes require anywhere from four to nine fingers to be used at once.

The key to playing the piano is to feel the music. Feeling the music involves getting encompassed by the song and to flow with the rhythm of the music. The foot pedal is often used to convey a sense of grace, and playing the music more slowly can also convey a sense of feeling. Feeling the song that is being played can create a much more powerful and moving song for the audience.

Taking piano lessons is the easiest way to learn this stuff. Finding a teacher requires research and friendly recommendations. The teacher should be nice and well seasoned in the theory of music.

Hey Jude! One of the Beatles’ most recognizable and spectacular songs. Really interesting things about the song and what was going on with the Beatles at the time. It was written by Paul in 1968, June of 1968 he said as he was driving down a country road and thinking about various things and so kind of composed in his head and what was going on at the time, they were just about to spend some time in the studio, they had been recording the white album around the time, an album called The Beatles. I just happened to have it handy here and an album that looked like this and our fab four guys including pictures of all of them I think came with this album, that’s great.

So here we have the important parts, we have pictures-Paul McCartney. Who else was in here? John Lennon. Ringo Starr, George Harrison. At least, I think that was George, figured by the process of elimination, he had to be there. Some great cutouts and stuff-not cutouts, that was Sergeant Pepper, but poster with all kinds of cool stuff on it came with the white album, but something that had been going on, George Martin had made a habit of recording certain songs and designating them to be singles and other songs to be album songs and pretty much never put the singles on the albums.

Now, he hasn’t been at-this was one of the biggest mistakes he made as he helped out with the Beatles career, but his philosophy on that was that he didn’t want people paying twice for the same song. If they bought the single, they buy the album, you get different stuff. Now, there were definitely some exceptions to this, but nowadays, people don’t buy singles or at least by the middle of the Beatles career nowadays, 4 years ago is what I’m really talking about now. By the middle of the Beatles’ career, people were buying more albums than singles and not worried about picking up the album if they already had the single, they’d pick up the single to see if they like it and then pick up the album-

What was the single, for those uninitiated folks? A single was a vinyl record, about 7 inches across, called the “45,” with a big hole in the middle of it. It can be part of Hey Jude guitar lesson now, but it was supposed to be a single about the same time as the White album was going to be out, too. The White album (or, officially, The Beatles) had some great tunes on it. My guitar is gently weeping right now, but let’s take a look at a few others. George wrote Piggies, a song; Savoie Truffle, a song about candy, Dear Prudence… but back to the subject of Hey Jude.

In Hey Jude, Paul had kind of come up with this little idea of trying to console John’s five year old son, Julian, now John was going through a divorce at the time with his first wife, Cynthia and it was still before he met Yoko, but Paul kind of put this song together as just a little pat on the back, it’s okay things will be fine and everything else will-the world will stay together for you, young man! And he demoed the song for the band in late June, played it for John at least and sang it and this is a great example of the way they work together because Paul was not a hundred percent confident in the lyrics. There was a lyric that really bugged him and he thought, this line is just not very good and it’s the line that goes, “The movement you need is on your shoulder.” And he said, he looked at John and said, don’t worry, I’ll change that.

John looked at him and says, “It’s the best line in the song. You’ve got to keep it, that’s not going anywhere.” And as Paul thought back, he thought, well, okay, he sees something in it, he’s right. It’s staying.

That’s a really good example of a couple of great songwriters getting together and doing some cooperative writing. He and John got together, practiced a few times, Paul put together some harmonies and other things the song needed, and then they planned to record it. They began to work on it in August of 1968, toward the end, something like the 29th or 30th. George Martin decided that there should be strings on it and other “big stuff,” with an orchestra and a lot of other people. They had tried to do this before, squeezing in an orchestra, and a lot of other people, when they recorded A Day in the Life at Abbey Road Studios, and it hadn’t worked out. This just wasn’t meant for something that elaborate.

So they moved the whole project away to another studio that had been used by some other artist at the time, James Taylor and Jackie Lomax called Soho Trident Studios and hired an orchestra, brought in 40 pieces or something like that, check my notes, violins, cellos, 20 pieces and then asked them to stick around and sing along on the chanting part towards the end, nah-nah-nah-I just went in the wrong key, that’s okay.

And the classical musicians love this because it meant they got paid double for doing two different things, for playing their instrument and singing, being part of the choir. So that was a good deal. Everybody made out pretty well at the Hey Jude recording sessions.

A few other kind of interesting things, in the United States, the albums-the United States was not as much into singles and album separation because we were used to albums having a hit song, so if you-you wouldn’t necessarily buy the singles, you buy the album to have everything, but Capitol Records released this album here a little bit later, actually I think it was 1970 when this came out called Hey Jude. Now, this album had a bunch of songs that had been singles that had not been on other albums because of the way Capitol released things back then. So we’ve got stuff like Paperback Rider from quite a bit earlier, Revolution from around the same time, but this was the electric version of Revolution that was the single and not the one that was on the white album, I Should Have Known Better that was of course from A Hard Day’s Night, but got cut from the movie so it consequently got cut from the Hard Day’s Night soundtrack that was released here, the red cover and the pictures of them.

And then a couple of older-later songs that hadn’t been out there, the Ballad of John and Yoko was another one that was just sort of floating around as a single and George’s song, Old Brown Shoe. So this album collector’s item nowadays, but most of these songs are available on the-instead, you can pick them up on Past Masters Volume Two-another great place to pick up all the cool Beatles tunes.

So another pretty-kind of interesting thing about this, the fade out at the end, this is one of the longer Beatles tunes out there, not the longest, not even second longest, but close, actually, it might be second, not counting Revolution-we’ve got to throw that one out of the mix, but the kind of anthem like fadeout at the end, where they’re just singing and then Paul starts kind of soulfully scat singing over some things that doesn’t always necessarily mix with the song, it’s a little too much of the flick your beak kind of feel, but there were other songs that had done stuff like this in particular, one by Donovan, the English folk singer, Donovan Leech had a tune called Atlantis that also ended with a long drawn out ending and I think there was something in Paul’s head that said, I’m going to one up Donovan on this, we’re going to make our ending bigger than his and this was an attitude that Paul had about a lot of songs because he had also heard P-towns and talked about The Who having just made, I think it was my generation, but in any case, it was P was saying, we just made the raunchiest rock and roll song ever and when Paul heard that, he decided he had to do-

Helter Skelter, Paul’s idea of topping everybody in raunchiness. Reasonably successful probably in that regard, but another example of Paul or everybody trying to top things was there was a song that was popular here in the United States at the same time called MacArthur Park written by Jimmy Web and sung by Richard Harris, I believe, a long song and actually up until that point, really the longest song that had been a hit on the radio.

So Hey Jude fades out, got a nice long fadeout and is one second longer than MacArthur Park. Accident? Probably not! At least according to Jimmy Web, now Jimmy Web wrote some great songs too, so we can’t discount him, wrote Galveston, By the Time I Get to Phoenix-particularly songs that were done by Glen Campbell back in the late 60s, phenomenal songs here in the United States, but-the end of the story on Hey Jude was that this has really become one of the most requested songs that people love to play and sing and it’s very simple. The chord progression, it’s very simple, chord one to chord five-I’m playing it in G here, the original key was E or F depending on which recording you hear. The final one came out in F by the way, but after chord one and five, it goes to a five, seven, D7, when I’m hearing G and then back to G and then finally to chord 4, the subdominant C.

That’s a really simple chord progression for this Hey Jude guitar lesson, but Paul’s melody was just spectacular, almost hymn like. Everything that went into this added up to what was a great song. Hey Jude is still popular, on everybody’s iPod, pretty much, and on their playlists; it’s also popular for playing, so much so that it could be called the Hey Jude guitar lesson — and you can learn to play with the Beatles Hey Jude guitar lesson — or the piano; the piano for Hey Jude is also pretty simple, just a chord and bass note, like so.

A couple of examples there of what the chords one, five and five seven sound like in the key of F, but Hey Jude should be on everybody’s heavy rotation list. That was the word I was looking for. If you were a radio station, you should be playing Hey Jude just about everyday!

There are many people who wish they knew how to play an instrument, such as the guitar. However, they are put off from learning the instrument when they realize that most teachers will require them to learn how to read music first. Fortunately, it is possible to learn guitar without reading music. You can even master the instrument without learning to read a single note.

The guitar and other similar instruments, such as the bass, have their own form of written music, which is referred to as tablature. Tablature is very easy to learn and read because it does not involve strange or unfamiliar symbols, which is the case with learning to read music.

When you read tablature, or tab for short, you will see a series of numbers and lines. The lines are arranged vertically and each one represents a string on the guitar. The line at the bottom will relate to the top string of your guitar, while the line at the top will relate to the bottom string of your guitar.

The difficulty with reading music is that you have to be able to translate the symbols into a location on the fretboard of your guitar. This is not true with tab.
