Many things can affect your success at learning to play the guitar. In this article we are going to address six items that can directly influence your success at learning to play.

1- Practice Effectively – We have all heard the phrase “practice makes perfect”. When it comes to learning to play guitar HOW you practice is at least as important as how long you practice. To explain, ensure that you will have a time slot free of interruptions since nothing hampers you ability to learn more than repeated interruptions.

2 – Patience – Realize that learning to play guitar will not happen overnight. Not everybody learns at the same rate and you may be slower than some but faster than others. Whatever your rate of progression stick with each lesson until you have it nailed before advancing to the next lesson. Remember Rome was not built in a day – But it was built on a solid foundation.

3 – Discipline – Discipline to ensure that you get your practice on the guitar each and every week. Having this discipline will ensure that you continue to build on last weeks success.

4 – Network – Networking with a few other guitar players in a jam session is a great way to enhance your guitar playing skills. There is nothing like having someone show you a new lick or learning a new song to stretch your abilities. If you do not have any guitar playing friends to jam with have a look at youtube and find a guitar solo you can play along with.

5 – Challenge Yourself – Seek out songs that are a bit more difficult than you are used to playing and work at learning them. You gain a double benefit when you master them. First of all you get a new song for your reproitoir and secondly you add a new skill set to your guitar playing.

6 – Play in a band – Playing in a band is one of the best things you can do to enhance you guitar playing skills. NOTHING has the same impact on your skills as does playing in a band. Even if you have to form a garage band go ahead and do it. It matters not if you ever perform for an audience as your skill set will expand dramatically for the experience.

Obviously there are hundreds of other small and large items that can affect your ability to learn to play guitar, but these half dozen properly and faithfully executed will provide a core around which to build your guitar skills.

Remember, there is no guitar master in the world, past or present, that did not start off by picking up a guitar and asking themselves if they could learn to play. If they can do it so can we.

The majority of players would conceed to the fact that playing thrash metal would be tougher to master than Puff the Magic Dragon, however this may not always be true. Is it true that fast metal requires more technical ability than another playing style?

The answers received would be so variable that determining a true answer would be frustrating, however let us explore the idea anyway. Depending typically on the type, metal leans on the element of quickness and melody. Having acknowledged this point, one could say that these attributes are what make the style so guitar based, and with more guitar comes more opportunity for complexity.

This concept could arguably be contradicted when jazz enters into the discussion. When you think about how complex jazz can be as a style you realize how difficult it is for new players. In a comparison discussion like this it is important to remember that these points are given value by each individual.

Within any genre of guitar playing you will have people that defend their techniques and maintain that it is superior to others. Most of us know that debates typically get people more settled in their original beliefs, and with style vs style discussions in music it is no exception.

Particular finger styles will variate but if the music lacks in something, it finds a way to make up for it. Look at funk. In your mind, what do you begin to think when you think funk? Slap bass most likely. As an afterthought you get wa-wa sounds and flangey riffs. Funk as a style may not have much else but it has mastered what it does have.

Without a little guitar knowledge learning heavy metal is a big challenge, but you can’t try to say that it’s a more intense style to get than any other. Sweep-picking is even used by country musicians who are skilled, like for example Brad Paisley. Everything in music is in the ear of the listener. The way that you perceive things in music is what really matters.

Please check out metal guitar riffs for some quick riffs to learn, or if you are looking for something a little more substantial then give metal guitar lesson a try.

The position of first heavy metal artist belongs to Alice Cooper when he was with a band called The Spiders in 1965. Now its nothing to hear bunches of metal guitarists. A few are VanHalen, Slash and Kirk Hammett.

Now you might be an accomplished guitarist, but when it comes to being a good heavy metal guitarist – do you have what it takes? Heavy metal uses a whole range of techniques which are different from regular lead guitar, and you have to be familiar with them if you want to play in a heavy metal band.

These techniques include power chords, fast picking and palm muting. And if you dont know how to use these, then its time for some fast learning. The only other alternative is to take some metal guitar lessons before you even consider putting your foot on the stage with a metal band. So for a minute, let’s take a quick look at each of these in detail.

Power Chords are the foundation to all heavy metal music. They involve a very simple formula. Two notes are played simultaneously. That’s it! This results in a chord that sounds really good under distortion, which is an essential part of heavy metal music. Since the fingering involves only two fingers, it also allows for quick chord changes, a big advantage when playing metal, which is usually done at a really fast tempo.

But to get the most out of the power chords, you need to be inventive, since these chords have no minor or major tensions. Power chords are an essential tool in your toolbox as you pickup tricks in your metal guitar lessons. And once you’ve gotten power chords down pat, then you can start making some very nice metal riffs.

Palm muting is another basic technique used in all forms of heavy metal, be it death metal, metalcore or thrash metal. When you palm mute, you subdue the sound of the guitar slightly by using the edge of your picking hand, while simultaneously continuing to pick the chord. The way to master this is to put just the right pressure to the strings with your hand to get the right sound you want. You can experiment by moving your hand closer or farther from the bridge.

Taking metal guitar lessons means you’ll have someone to guide you in the right techniques and correct you when you’re doing it wrong. A great teacher will help you find hard to find secrets and help you discover some of your own tricks. With the right lessons, you’ll be rocking out like your favorite metal gods in no time.

If you’ve ever seen a shred guitarist in action, then you know how awesome they can be, with their hands seeming to whirl around the strings and producing sounds that you never imagined a guitar could produce. And if you have some solo guitar grounding, and you’ve tried to shred at home, then you know – its hard. It really needs a mix of speed and technique that is really hard to master.

And if you’ve ever even thought about shredding like Paul Gilbert, Eddie Van Halen or even BucketHead, then please, by all means. Take shred lessons. Shredding lessons will give you all the tips and techniques you need in order to shred like your favorite hero.

Let’s take a look at some of the techniques you should learn from guitar shred lessons: Legato – this is a technique that is more associated with classical music. When playing legato, the notes are smoothly played without pauses in between them. Legato is also commonly used with other techniques like hammer ons and pull offs.

Tapping – this technique enables you to play notes by tapping on the fret board in conjunction with the fretting hand. The two types of tapping are one-handed tapping and two-handed tapping Don’t be fooled by their names – both require the use of two hands.

Here’s a third technique, Alternate picking and Sweep Picking. – These two are very suitable for fast tempo shredding. With Alternate picking, you continuously alternate between up and down pick strokes. This is the style that I play most of the time. In Sweep Picking, you make notes by combining a sweeping motion of the pick. And you match a fret hand technique.

Now once you learn these techniques, shredding lessons will also provide you with drills and tips to speed up your guitar playing. This will help you avoid unproductive techniques and increase your rate of progress. Whats important is that as you avoid these needless mistakes, you also help your guitar playing down the road by not picking up bad habits. Don’t make the mistake of thinking that a talented guitar player doesn’t need lessons. Even the best players can and do benefit from guitar shred lessons.

Bet you didn’t know that Eric Clapton plays the solo on the Beatles song “While My Guitar Gently Weeps”. I think it’s one of the most memorable solos in rock. There’s really no way around it; if you want to learn guitar solos like that, then you have to practice your scales. And while learning chords will enable you to begin playing songs at once, you really have to master scales if you want to play solo like your guitar heroes.

An important scale, if not the most important one, is the Blues Scale. And you really need to master this one. Its actually the minor Pentatonic scale. But with a twist. Its got an extra note added. I guess you might call this…. The “blues” note. And after you’ve mastered this scale, you’ll be able to play about any tune you can try your hand at. You’ll also be able to improvise on your own guitar solos.

Look, we’re wanting to learn guitar solos, right? So lets figure out how to play a basic Blues Scale first. Begin with your first finger pressing down on each of the six strings – all at once. Ready for the next step? Put your second finger on your fifth string. Put your third finger on the third, fourth and fifth strings. Finally put your fourth finger on the first, second, third and sixth strings. Ok, so you’ve got the scale done at least once.

Now do it forwards and backwards. And when you do it, pick downwards and upwards. Keep doing that. This picking technique is called Alternate picking. Aright, ready? Now play with it a little bit. Challenge yourself. Noodle around with it, and see what you can discover with it. Since you’ve now got the Blues Scale behind you, its time to step things up a notch. Start to learn guitar solos with different notes you’ve just picked up from the scale. Stick a bunch of these same notes together in different sequences and you’ve created … your own licks!

And now, you might want to go even further and learn different positions of the various scales. This will give you huge variations in your solos. Just pick a lick and you’re off and running with a cool solo! You can also start playing around with different techniques to make your solos sound better. For instance, slides, vibratos and other stuff like half step bends. A little shredding wouldn’t hurt either! Ok, maybe we’re getting ahead of ourselves here. Taking things even a little further, go online and try playing some of the licks you like… and play along with them. Something I used to do was just play some music on the radio, or an mp3 file, and start jamming to it.

And when improvising, try avoiding the common mistake of playing too many notes. Someone once told me that some of the best notes played, are the notes you don’t play. Some of the best guitarists aren’t after impressing the audience with virtuosity. They just want to communicate a feeling by using their playing.

Now that we are finish with the topic of composing songs for musical instruments, like the guitar along with your voice, let us now learn the common musical and song composition words such as substance, vocal phrasing, mood, metre, prosody and style.

Substance refers to the meaning you want to impart to your listeners. You make use of the normal language and speech being used but instead of reciting them you put music into it. Your creative talents are expressed and it may contain topics like love, politics, war and other human experiences that have been specified in my earlier articles.

The manner in which you make use of your voice to stress the song’s lyrics is referred to as Vocal Phrasing. To better put it, sing in a conversational manner and you get your audience response well. The way the song is sung with the appropriate beat, tempo, mood, melody should be given emphasis. This is why you need to know the proper way of producing your vowels, stretching the notes and words if necessary. If you have to recite a poem or an oratorical piece, you need to be able to pronounce the words correctly and that is the way you should be singing as well. This is the test the range of your voice. Phrasing like in a conversation must be executed well in order to appropriately impart what you really mean.

The Emotion sets the ambiance of the song which can be greatly controlled by the capability of the singer’s tone of voice as well as in the apposite way of rendering the song. The words, the phrasing, the stresses all account for the song’s ambience that will in turn touch the hearts of the listeners. It is therefore very essential that the singer aptly enunciate the words in the song. Without this ability, the listener will not be able to relate with the song; it may be that the latter can appreciate the tune but cannot fathom what it really means.

The Measure. In music, measure is very essential as this is where you put together the usual language we use in communicating that will be in consonance with the tune. The composer must not have too many wordings in the arrangement that tend to crowd and at the same time will make the singer to always change the speed just to be able to follow the tune. The number of words and phrases for every canto or verse must be in agreement with the melody. You will notice that most protest and anti-war songs have this trait. The knack of the singer to stretch and not to stretched the wordings and syllables and the quantity of wordings in a canto or row completes the true definition of a good quality measure in a song and which will give the one singing it an allowance to catch his breath and to bring the right locution.

The Prosody. This is the lyrics, the rhythm, the melody and the chord progression completely in agreement with each other. We can liken it to a relationship where there should be proper understanding, trust, love and honesty. If one of these characteristics fails, it will crumble. Prosody, like metre, should be able to make the mood and the message of the song in harmony. One cannot use a Minor Chord Progression for a cheerful song. Minor chords normally are intended for ho-hum or laid-back songs that touches the emotions, such as too much melancholia. On the other hand, a Major Chord Progression is intended for a buoyant upbeat. The mood, melody, substance, phrasing, chord progression and metre are being connected by prosody.

The Style. This is what is said to be the signature of a composer or a singer. By the mere mention of your name, the audience will already know the category of songs that you compose or sing. There are, however, some composers who have tried to compose songs which are not their forte and sad to say, did not earn another feather in their cap. A music avid fan would be able to distinguish the difference of the song’s beat. A Beatles’ song can never be mistaken as a Rolling Stones composition and vice versa.

Can you learn to play guitar online and not bother with formal lessons? That's what many websites claim, when they offer to teach guitar proficiency in just a few sessions. The prospect is certainly attractive if you aren't sure you want to commit to the expense and time of real life guitar lessons. But it might be wise to stop and think about whether you would be learning properly, or whether you might miss something important by not studying with a real live person.

If learning guitar is so easy, did all those self-taught rock stars have it right all along? That may be what you’re thinking when you hear so many claims these days that it’s possible to learn how to play this instrument on your own, without much more than a few websites and perhaps some books. Are formal guitar lessons really not needed at all? Have guitar students just wasted their time when they could have done it all themselves? Or did they receive something that people missed when they learned on their own?

In the past, you might have avoided taking lessons by studying on your own from guitar lesson books similar to those used in a teaching studio. But now you can learn guitar online as well, in two formats often used in combination. Written web pages provide diagrams showing where to position your fingers and what combinations of positioning will create which chords.

But as online video technology has increased in power, written descriptions are often supplemented by videos showing you how it’s done. And sometimes the written material is eliminated altogether, with the video and its commentary constituting the entire lesson.

While it’s true that if you learn guitar online you’ll actually get to see a demonstration of how actions should be performed, which you’d never see with a book, you may still be missing something. Qualified teachers who are able to see you play can detect flaws in technique on the spot, and immediately give a demonstration to correct them. If you take formal guitar lessons, then you get the benefit of this sort of guidance, which you simply can’t get from a pre-taped or written lesson.

If you’re thinking of taking your playing in a more professional direction, then formal guitar lessons are an absolute must. No professional classical guitarist, for example, can really succeed without that sort of rigorous training. If you’re not sure you’ll go beyond the beginner acoustic guitar, though, it might be enough just to get a few of the basics from a website and some videos. What is important is how you want to use the instrument in the future, and that will determine how formally or casually you’ll need to be trained.

A well tuned guitar is a necessity and the best way to get that is by using a guitar tuner. Click here to read guitar tuner reviews on the most popular brands and models, like the Korg Pitchjack tuner, and see how they stack up.

To start playing songs on your guitar you’ll want to first learn some of the easy guitar chords available to you. Later on you’ll have a chance to add to your repertoire but for now we’re going to stick with the 4 simplest chords available to you.

In the first two weeks of learning the basic guitar chords my students will often fight me tooth and nail over trying to get their fingers into position and making their chords ring true and clear, not to mention trying to change from one chord to another to the beat of the metronome or backing track. I’m going to show you how to overcome these problems right from the start.

I don’t think any guitar lesson is complete without applying the theory to a real world example and a practice routine you can use by yourself. We will cover a simple song using just three of the four chords you are about to learn and I will provide a routine for you to add to your daily, or weekly practice schedule that will help solidify this knowledge.

EMaj Open Chord

You’ll be using three fingers, your first, second and third fingers to form the E Major Chord. Place your index finger on the 4th string from the top on the 1st fret, your 2nd finger goes on the 2nd string from the top on the 2nd fret and your 3rd finger goes on the 3rd string from the top on the 2nd fret. Strum downwards from the very top string to the very bottom string. All 6 strings should ring clearly, if not check your fingers aren’t accidentally touching adjacent strings, and you’re applying enough force.

GMaj Open Chord

Place your 1st finger on the 2nd string from the top, 2nd fret. Your 2nd finger on the top string 3rd fret, and your 3rd finger on the bottom string on the 3rd fret.

CMaj Open Chord

The open chord C Major uses just 5 of the strings on your guitar, be careful not to use the Low E String when strumming this one. Place your 1st finger at the 1st fret on the B String, your 2nd finger at the 2nd fret on the D String and your 3rd finger at the 3rd fret on the A String. The Root Note is C which is played as the A String fretted at the 3rd fret.

The D Major Open Chord

Coming down one more string we only play the bottom 4 strings for this chord. Place your 1st finger 4th string down 2nd fret, your 2nd finger on the bottom string 2nd fret and your 3rd finger 5th string down 3rd fret.

Now let’s put our theory into practice, we’re going to learn Knocking On Heaven’s Door by Guns N Roses, it’s a simple chord progression of 2 downstrokes of the G Major Chord, moving to 2 downstrokes of the D Major Chord and finishing with 4 downstrokes of the C Major Chord. You can find a backing track to play to by searching Google for “Knocking of Heavens Door backing track”.

Let me show you a simple practice routine you can add to your practice sessions to improve muscle memory and changing between chords. Use just the 4 chords outlined above, randomize their order for each session, and play each chord in sequence for a count of 4 beats before moving to the next chord. To start with these changes may take you minutes to complete, but before long (usually 2-4 weeks) you’ll be able to move seamlessly from one chord to another.

To really get a grasp on changing between chords and increasing the flexibility in your fingers it is essential that you change the sequence of the chords in this practice routine each time you come to use it. Today you might choose D, C, E then G, tomorrow you should change this order for maximum effect.

Practicing just these four chords may not seem like a lot but you’re building on foundational strength you will use for the rest of your guitar playing life. You will improve your muscle memory, finger flexibility and overall speed. After 2-4 weeks you will wonder how you ever struggled in the first place.

Adam Summers is out to bust the myth that you require cash to learn how to play guitar.

Music is its many forms provides enjoyment for people and learning to play guitar is just one way that you are able to have this pleasure for yourself and others. Before you are able to actually play the guitar properly though, you will need to have beginning guitar education as well as a guitar!

On the face of it, as an instrument the guitar doesn’t seem to have a great deal to recommend it to someone who’s searching to acquire this instrument. Nevertheless, all this could change from the very first moment you begin your first guitar lessons. Beginning guitar players must not become discouraged even before they take their first lessons.

These lessons are types where you should have the opportunity of learning the theoretical aspect of guitar playing as well as being able to pluck at the strings to generate a pleasurable sound.

You will be able to uncover instructors who could give you beginning guitar lessons from your neighborhood community and in addition from your local newspapers. These are not the only ways that you could learn about beginning guitar lessons. There are many books in addition to audio tapes plus CDs that will also provide this skill to you.

As with all of these beginning guitar training systems, Compact discs and instruction, the main fact that needs to be understood is that you should feel comfortable and positive of your capability to learn and play the guitar. Without this assurance you will not be able to appreciate the various instructions that you are given in your guitar tutorial.

For this reason if you are learning to play the guitar from an instructor you must be able to ask the tutor for advice and aid if you think that you are missing out on some point of the lesson.

Since you can’t ask courses or audio or DVD lessons for assistance you should be able to look or listen to the different steps and see where you fingers should be positioned on the guitar and what chord every guitar string signifies.

Also when you are comfortable holding the guitar and you have learned to make out the numerous chords in your beginning guitar lessons, you are able to then proceed to learn how to combine these basic chords together to create a small song or a tune.

As your beginning guitar lessons move forward, you will gain the chance of trying out several kinds of music. These unique styles are well recognized sounds like that of jazz, rap, blues, rock ‘n’ roll and several others.

With so many exciting aspects of guitar playing to try out it is not that extraordinary that people love listening to the sound of a guitar. Having beginning guitar coaching is one of the best ways you can be taught to play guitar and remodel your little tunes into delightful songs.
